Why does my engine bog down when I give it gas?

I have a 1985 Ford Bronco Custom 5.8 liter V8 w/ carburetor. I have to give it gas once I start it to keep it going for a minute. Also when I give it to much gas it bogs way down and almost dies. It has a new fuel filter and has a brand new timing chain that was set in place. What else could it be?

It sounds like the carb needs work. Is the timing chain installed properly and the timing set right? If the accelerator pump in the carb isn't set right and working properly the engine will bog when you hit the throttle. That pump shoots a shot of gas into the carb to match the higher air flow when the throttle is opened.

Carburetor needs to be dissassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt

Too much gas for not enough air flow… Just needs some tuning…

Could be the excelerader pump todays fuel eats them up, look and see if it is getting a shot of fuel when you hit the gas.

Are you getting enough fuel to the carb?

Generally, a bog with a carburetor is caused by a problem with the accelerator pump. Its a little rubber piston thingy about 1/2 inch in diameter, INSIDE the carb. You need to get a carb rebuild kit nowadays to get one. Years ago, you could get one separately.

  • What could cause my 95 Ford F150 xl 4.9L I6 to lag or try to die when you give it gas? We have replace a Gas tank and it's fuel pump but the truck is still running rough and loosing power when you drive it. We've also replaced the injectors, I also want to know if the Fuel Pressure Regulator is causing this or if it is the timing that is off on it. Sometimes it refuses to start but it always turns over. There's no way to take off very fast because you have to ease onto the gas to be able to take off without killing it or the truck trying to die.

  • Why does my car die when it slows down/stops? It literally dies every time I either brake or let up off the gas, but starts back up fine. I recently changed 3 spark plugs (1 had stuff in the way and I was strapped for time). I plan on getting to the rest tomorrow. What could cause this? I'll also add that, when it slows down, all the lights get dim, but when I accelerate, the lights go back to normal The car is a 2004 ford explorer eddie bauer 4.6L
