Are the rumors about Ford motors true?

I have a lot of Chevy fans in my family. They all tend to agree that Ford said "no" to the government on gas consumption. I don't really pay much attention to government vehicle bills, and I can't find anything on the internet supporting this claim by my relatives. But, they are convinced the new GT500 is a product of advantage of rules or lack of

"Gas Consumption" laws in the US are mandated by what is called the Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE standard.

It is federal law, and Ford does not have the right to tell the government no any more than a private individual has the right to ignore the laws.

CAFE is an average of the fuel economy of all the vehicles an automaker sells. If it sells a certain number of cars that fail to meet the standard, like the GT500, it has to sell enough vehicles like Fiestas that exceed the standard enough to average out.

Ford is the only domestic automaker that did not need a bailout from the US government during the recession. GM's bailout, and subsequent partial ownership by the government, led to a lot of rumors and conspiracy theories that the Obama Administration was mandating GM make certain cars. That simply isn't true. Cars like the Volt were in development long before the recession and bailout. The fact that the Volt came out during the recession is a coincidence.

Don't think so. I had 2 fords both spent very little time in the shop. My old explorer was reliable so is my town car.

So long as Ford pays (and presumably passes on to the buyer) the appropriate gas-guzzler tax, the EPA isn't going to say a word.

It's hard to be sure about it
