Are foreign cars really more expensive to buy than American cars?

Just so you know, my family that lives in my area has almost exclusively owned American cars. My family said it was because foreign cars cost too much money. Well, I had suggested that my grandma buy a Mazda (she had a Ford but it got totaled by my dad), which I don't consider as all that "foreign" considering that Ford and Mazda were partners for 31 years. However, my uncle says that foreign cars tend to cost too much. However, do used Mazdas really cost too much compared to American brands?

Most Japanese model vehicles are actually less expensive than comparable American models. Your uncle is living in the past. Go buy that Mazda before it gets away. American made BMW X5 is pretty expensive compare to the Mexico made Ford Focus.

Power to the people. There's not much difference anymore. They are usually priced similarly for the category the fall in.(example comparing Luxury to Luxury. Midsize to Midsize etc) Of the 3 lowest priced new cars for sale in the US today ( based on MSRP ), only one is "American". In order from the least expensive, they are:

Nissan Versa
Chevy Spark
Mitsubishi Mirage

But the reason I list the Chevy as "American" is because even though it has a US manufacturer's brand, it is actually a Daewoo product ( made in South Korea ). So actually the least expensive cars to buy brand new are foreign, not US made. Foreign cars are actually far cheaper. Originally when the United states started importing vehicles they were VERY cheap. The government realized that if they didn't add import taxes than American car companies would run out of business. They are more expensive but that is only because of the massive import taxes put on foreign car companies. A true import - like Mazda, typically do cost more. That is because of import duties / tariffs paid, when parts / cars are shipped to the US. Many cars that you think are foreign are made here in the US. Some cars that you think are pure American are made of foreign produced parts.
