Advice on making Ford Transit Custom an off roader

I'd like to convert my Transit Custom into a camper van, and take it off road maybe. Would putting bigger tires on the van have nay effect on the carrying capacity? Would it make the van less able to take the weight of a bed and kitchen?

Hi so the idea of a camper has been done before. However there's no way a ford transit body is going to be adaptable enough for off road use. Not rigid enough. You need a chassis which it does not have. The integrity comes from the structure which a ford transit has next to nothing of. So unless you can come up with some sort of extra load bearing ideas it is never going to be the answer. A Land rover single cab has always been the best idea to turn into a camper.

Actually there has already been a few Ford transit 4 x 4's made and supplied. If I recall correctly to a utility company in UK. Yes that vehicle can be adapted but it gets expensive. Changing tires won't affect load capacity f the van but do check load rating of tires and if suitable? World of difference off road tires to road stores and van tires ( the van ones have stiffer sidewalls than cars etc)
check out magazines and clubs. We may even find somebody else has done this conversion and can offer advise. Do be aware insurance will rise as modified .easier to buy the ford supplied 4 x 4 ones. They do a short and a long wheelbase version ( or did)
