I want to know the diameter of the piston that fits into a 4 inch bore.
A 4" diameter piston fits in a 4" bore. There's a slight amount of clearance but if you buy standard pistons, they should fit a stock bore.
The bore of a standard OHV 302 is 4 inches. If that's what you're asking.
It's a nominal 4" bore… The piston diameter may vary due to the manufacturer. There has to be an operating clearance as the aluminum piston expands more than the cast iron of the cylinder. Some manufacturers build the clearance value into the piston and some expect you to bore and hone the block to a proper clearance. A cast piston could be 3.996-3.998, giving you.002 to.004 cylinder wall clearance in a 4.000" bore. A forged piston could need.007-.008" clearance. This why you measure all your stuff with micrometers…
