Why do I only get 200 mile from a tank of gas in my 1999 ford Taurus?

Tire pressure should be looked at and every wheel jacked into the air so you can spin the tire. It should spin freely… Otherwise the brakes are sticking on.

Then it is your driving habits. The most economical speed is 53MPH in high gear… And you do not "DROP THE PEDAL TO THE METAL" on a green light. The roads are not a dragstrip. Just gently cruise up to speed and keep it there "unless weather or road conditions warrant you go slower" Black Ice or hard pack snow is a reason… You drive with more care and caution. Check your air cleaner. There's a chance it is plugged up from a summer of dusty roads. Engine needs gas, spark, and AIR to run. Reduce the air flow and it runs rich using more fuel than air. If you spend a lot of time in bumper to bumper slow moving traffic, then you are running basically a stationary engine. Stationary motors can go through thousands of gallons of fuel and not move 1 inch. So it is the car or your driving style or "WHEN" you enter the congested traffic flow; that is cutting down the MPG

Any lead on your soles, heavy acceleration, heavy braking, the faster you go the more you use.
Accelerate easy, look ahead and judge braking earlier, keep speed to about 50mph.
See if that helps, it should.

Most likely it is due to how and where you drive it…

In my 2005 with 121k miles it was under 200, i did the tires clean the trunk and tune up and when up to
210 per tank still bad, later I replace the oxygene sensor and bingo. Now i get close to 270 per tank

Use fuel saving MOBIL ONE 0W-30 oil ONLY after a motor flush! Use BOSCH or DENSO iridium plugs and have yoru throttle body and IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE cleaned up! ALso get FUEL EFFICIENT TIRES that have LOW rolling resistances, like the GREEN tires from MICHELIN!

It's got a 16 gallon tank and gets 18 mpg. That's 288 miles per tank… And that's if you top it all the way off and drive it until it runs dry.

Because the gas tank is not completely full.

Driving habits and shape of engine/drivetrain.

Cool

  • Which car is the overall to keep for a couple of yrs? 1999 Nissan maxima, 1999 Altima, 2006 ford Taurus or 2002 buick lesabre? All of them have low mileage as the Taurus have 69000 and the maxima have the highest of 123000. They all under 1100 bucks.
  • My 2000 Ford Taurus won't shift into fourth gear is it ok on a 700 mile round trip drive? I have a 2000 ford Taurus and it doesn't shift into fourth gear anymore. Its been that way for 2 years. It runs fine just doesn't shift into fourth gear and the transmission light does come on after a while of driving it. I was wondering if it would be ok to take it on a 700 mile round trip drive? I know its not good for it I just need to know if I'm going to be stranded on the highway somewhere because my trans went out.
  • Is it normal to have to fill the gas tank of a 2000 ford Taurus se every week? Don't laugh. I'm ignorant about cars and this is my first one. I own a 2000 Taurus station wagon. I drive 6 miles to work and 6 miles back every day and don't drive many other places than that. I live in the city. I'm filling my tank every week and my boyfriend says that's way too much. He says I should replace the spark plugs. Would he be correct?
  • Am I doing the mile per tank math wrong? I have a Ford Taurus 2002 and it's in bad shape, I know that. The internet says it should have 18 gallon tank and 20 mpg city. My math would be 18gallons X 20miles=360 miles for the tank before needing a refill oif all good. But I figured I've driven about 78 miles the last 3 days and have had to put in about 42 gallons of fuel in it. Am I doing the math wrong or do I really only get 1.85 miles per gallon from the car (78miles/42gallons=1.85mpg)
