There's a line up mark on the range sensor if that mark is not lined up it won't start in park or neutral but might start in another gear. Hold your foot on the brake hold key in start position and run the lever through the gears if it starts in another gear its not lined up correctly. If you take the sensor off the car and look at it a straight mark (line) will be on the circle that goes on the linkage on the transmission that line should be lined up with similar line on the black part of the sensor line up the two and install with the car in park the other problem they're several range sensors (depending on year) and you have the wrong one installed
Weird, so i must ask, did you use a ford or motorcraft part?
was the range locator set (in the mlp manual lever position sensor)
when you lined up the location on the trans case?
why was this part being replaced?
if the car started before… Try the original part, at least then you are back where you go and can reverify diagnosis. Then you can either make sure your new part is aligned prior to installation, or refer to the instruction sheet about lever position and shifter position. Its supposed to have a removable plastic arrow shaped piece inserted to hold it while you correct the parts to line up. Report findings on these factors for more help.
also check simple things you may have disconnected or defeated during the previous work. Retrace your steps.
gearshift alignment being where it was before? Its controlled by alignment of the shift cable adjustment.
During your previous diagnostic steps, did you have a fuse blow?
since its reading is used by the pcm you may have a code stored in the memory. You can get a code reader at the parts store, or borrow/rent one. Then google the code definition and run the pinpoint tests.
probably lead to misaligned parts, but defective new part? Lets see what your responses reveal after recheck
- Where can I buy a transmission range sensor for a 1999 Ford Contour? I need a new transmission range sensor for my 1999 Ford Contour 2.0L 4cyl automatic but I can't seem to find them anywhere. I really don't want to take it into the shop and pay over $100 for it when I can buy it and replace it myself. If you could please paste links that have it or stores that have that brand please let me know. It would be such a simple fix if I was actually able to find one.
- Why did my car start and die when put into gear? Now it won't start at all? It's a cold winter day (below zero) Car started right up! I let it run for about 2 minutes, I put it in gear and it just died. I figured it's cold out, not real surprising, but when I tried to start it again, it won't start! Turns over fine but engie won't start! Any ideas? 2003 Ford Taurus 3.0L
- My '06 Ford Taurus is having what i'm assuming transmission problems, any ideas? The other day while attempting to back up a small slope, my engine revved up and a message came on the info area of my dash saying to check the transmission. I turned off the car, turned it on and the check engine light was on. I go home and check the trans fluid and it's full. The next day I start my car and the check engine light is off, but now my car shakes on heavy acceleration and gear changes. I'm not a car person. Any ideas?
- Restoring old Ford Transit. Can't get engine to start. Any ideas please? Friend is restoring 1976 Transit Diesel. Dry stored and in excellent condition. Re-conditioned injectors, clean fuel. Engine turns over valve-gear working (belt intact). Compression, fuel at injectors, no air in system engine turning over with new battery. Apparently no heater plugs on this engine (2.4). Tried eze-start just 'coughs' but will not actually start. At wits end! Any ideas please?
