Do people really not keep their cars that long?

The reason I ask is because my grandma (who has a pretty old car, a 1999 Ford Taurus) says that most cars on the road aren't that old and that most people get a new car every four years. I'm about to get my first car and when I told her I was thinking about getting a used car (like a Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, or Toyota Camry) and I told her it would be about 12 years old or so she said that was too old and that it would start breaking down. What's wrong with getting a car that old? Some people tell me a reason for her view is because she always mainly owned American cars and isn't really aware of the reliability of companies like Honda and Toyota. However, I know that any Accord, Altima, or Camry is going to last longer than a Taurus.

Japanese cars might be more reliable but 12 years old is pretty old for a car and that's generally around the time that cars become a bit more of a hassle. You could buy one and it could last you a few years, on the flip side it could go in a few months. I'd definitely look at something newer just to be on the safe side, personally my limit is ~8 years old Miles are more important than the age of a vehicle. I know people who put over 100 thousand miles in a year. My pickup is seven years old and only has 50 thousand. Most people drive more than ten thousand in a year. 120 thousand plus miles is reaching the limit that I would feel comfortable buying a used car.

  • Why would people buy older foreign cars instead of brand new American cars? I see it all the time, people driving 7-8 year old Mercedes or BMWs that they paid probably paid around $20,000. They could of easily gone out and bought a brand new Ford or Dodge, but they didn't. They bought a Mercedes with over 100k miles. All worn and torn on the inside. But aslong as they're shining on the outside I guess.
  • Why do people keep saying that Ford's testimony was credible? Fact: The witnesses she gave do not corroborate any of her story. Fact: She can't remember even basic details of when or where. Fact; She lied to the committee about not being able to appear on Monday because of a fear of flying. Please inform me which of these fact you disagree with and why. Otherwise you are just deflecting.
  • Why don't American cars last as long as Japanese cars? My family has owned a Ford Taurus and a Nissan Altima of similar model years. Both cars are still running, but the Taurus has very low mileage (it's a 1999 with only 85,000 miles) and the interior is in horrible condition and the plastics Ford put in have been known for breaking. None of this has happened with the Altima, even though it has more miles. Why?
  • Do some people really care that much about driving a really nice car? My dad is perfectly okay with his 1992 Ford Taurus with 210,000 miles on it, no heat (he lives in Chicago btw), no A/C, and a f::::ked up passenger side door. He's not poor by any means, he's a CFO of a bank. He just says that driving that P. Builds character and he only cares about having a car that can take him from point A to point B.
