Should I replace my car battery?

Should I replace my car battery? - 1

Added (1). I have a 2007 Ford Five Hundred. It hasn't been used much over the holiday period - it was probably last driven on 12/23. Not sure how old the battery is but I don't think it's been replaced for at least 3 years.

Added (2). When I tried to start it this morning, it make a fast clack-clack-clack-clack sound and wouldn't start. Now it's not even making the clacking sound. I tested the battery with a multimeter. It came up with a reading of 10V the first time. I tried it again half an hour later and got 8V. That time, I also tried turning on the headlights to see if that would move the needle at all. I think it did but it wasn't significant. Should i replace it?

If it is weak and/or won't hold a charge, yes.

Yes it could cause other things in your car not to work

Could be the battery… Or the alternator… Or electronics… Or a loose drive belt.

A good - and honest - shop will completely check the battery before saying you need a new one… And verify that the charging system is OK. Most parts stores such as Auto Zone will also check your battery for free.

These days a good quality battery should last at least 6 years…(we have a 2006 Five Hundred - it goes to an independent shop once a year for all scheduled service and a checkover, including the battery… I'm not accustomed yet to batteries lasting so much longer than in the past… They recommended changing the original battery last year when the car had been in service 8 years!)

Yes.

Those batteries are 12 volts. If it reads ten or eight, then yes, it's time.

Why don't you just CHARGE it first? Then have it tested at the auto parts store. Most will check it for free. Most battery stores will check it for free. Walmart will check it for free.

You also need to have your charging system checked.

Maybe you left a light on?

Did you notice a low voltmeter reading (if you have gauges)?

Did you notice any red warning light on your instrument panel?

Most batteries will last at least 3-5 years. My last battery lasted 9.5 years!

If you decide to just replace it without charging it or checking it, you should still have your charging system checked.

Go ahead and replace it. If you have a battery charger you can try to recover it with a slow charge first.

  • Should I replace the oil in my new car? I bought a new Ford Focus. I have read that replacing the oil after the first 1000 miles can benefit the engine's lifespan. What are the pros and cons of such an oil change, and would you recommend it?
  • New alternator and battery but battery still won't charge in my ford explorer 93? My battery wouldnt charge So i just replaced my alternator a few days ago knowing it would fix the problem. It appears that the alternator was not the problem. I've got a brand new alternor and when i check the battery(running car), it just stays on 12.5V and doesn't go up. I tried using it yesterday and it just drained out on me. I tried 3 good batteries already and checked if they charge in my car but they don't. Oh, the alternator came with a volt regulator.
