Metallic ticking noise Ford Ranger?

I have a 90s ford ranger that is making a pretty loud, metallic ticking noise.

When I first start the vehicle and shift to either drive or reverse while idling, I can hear the ticking, I don't hear it when in park.

As I lightly step on the accelerator, the ticking increases in frequency until I reach speeds of around 30-40 mph where I can no longer hear the ticking noise. After driving for a few minutes at these speeds and idling again, the ticking noise does not occur. I will only hear the ticking again when I restart the vehicle a little while later.

Anyone have any idea of what this might be?

That sounds like a lifter ticking. Hard to tell without actually hearing it.

Could be many things. You have something metal that goes back to running quiet after heating up. If you can safely put it off the ground & start it up, have someone duplicate your drive speed & check to see where the noise is

  • Ticking noise coming from engine? - 1 I have a 1978 Ford Ranchero and there's a ticking noise coming from the passenger side In engine. And this car was given to me and I had my camshaft, timing chain set, and all 16 lifters changed what can this noise be? Could it be from a bad rocker arm? And what can I do to quiet this noise. I'm broke so I can't do any further expensive repairs
  • 03 ford ranger 3.0L v6 making clicking noise? A few days ago my ranger started making a clicking noise from the engine. It increases with the rpms and seems to go away when torque is applied like going up a hill. I had probably waited too long to change my oil and I just changed it and it seemed to maybe help a little. Does anyone know what the sound might be?
  • Low compression cause ticking? On my 2005 v6 ford mustang, i have a problem. All of the cylinders are at about 185-195psi except 2. 2 of them are at 170psi and both of those make a ticking noise when the engine is on and both of their spark plug gaps close when i start. Don't tell me i have the wrong plugs because i don't. I have tried 3 new OEM plugs on each and the same thing happens. What is wrong and how do i fix it?
  • Noise works, but when I push it, it also makes a clicking/rattling noise? I have a 2012 Ford Focus, and while the horn works, and sounds (as it normally does), when I press it, it also makes a weird clicking/rattling noise (also kinda like a jingle sound - hard to describe). It sounds as if it's coming from behind the center console/under the center console, but it's hard to tell. Any ideas what it could be? With any answers - any advice on how to fix it? Question should say HORN Works
