How to make a V4 engine faster?
I have a 1991 ford ranger. The engine was rebuilt so it only has about 65,000 miles. I love the truck but when i floor it it seems like i'm driving like a grandma. The only "performance" thing on it is a cold air intake. What can i do to add HP and increase response time? I've cleaned out the throttle body intake and the mass air flow sensor and it helped a little bit it doesn't idle as hard now but i want speed! The fact the speedometer maxes out at 85 doesn't really help tho. Any suggestions?
First, it's an Inline 4 not a V, so that might be causing confusion when you try and research things.
But, back to your question… You have a 2.3 litre engine, that made a whole 88hp, when it was new! And that was almost 25 years ago… It was never fast. Now it's tired and even slower.
Suggestion… Find a cheap similar vehicle with the 3.0l V6. Doesn't matter if it's a rusty wreck or doesn't even run. You strip the engine and accessories out, get the engine rebuilt so it's running like a new one again, then transplant that into your trusty ole truck. That should give you 140-150 hp, still with a stock engine. You have all the parts you need from the donor vehicle.
Still won't be a dragster, but it will be a lot quicker than the tired old 4 cyl you have now.

- How to make my thunderbird faster? I have a 97 ford thunderbird Lx with the 4.6 modular v8 engine. I want to make it a bit faster for fairly cheap. I was thinking about getting a tune and another thing or two. Was thinking maybe and intake or exhaust system. Maybe a cat back exhaust or maybe a high flow cat converter? Any ideas on what would be better or Give me the most bang for my buck? Also if anyone could include links for any of the parts it would be so benificial!
