How to avoid emissions testing?

I have a 2006 Ford Mustang Gt, completely built up with every aftermarket part you could think of, but it didn't pass emissions due to not having cats or o2 sensors running, it would cost $3000+ to get it running legally, I'm in northern Illinois. Do I have any options? Are there any ways of selling this car if it won't pass? Could I maybe sell it to my mom (I live with her) and buy me another year until I go to college which will be a place without emissions testing. Any other options are appreciated!

If it's not legal for you, then what would change if you sold it to her? I live in the way south corner of Nevada, close to both Arizona & California. I know some people who keep a small apartment here in Nevada so they can register their cars here instead of in California. Also, 'some' states have a repair maximum that you would have to pay to repair a non-compliant car. After you spend this amount, if the car still doesn't pass, you get a 'by' & get your plates. The next time your inspection comes-up, the same thing applies… That might allow you to limp-by until college…

Why would your mom want a car that she couldn't drive or title? You could try to sell it to someone who lives in an area where they don't do emissions testing. I don't have cats on my GT either, but it's not an issue because there's no emissions testing where I live.

  • What are the most reliable car brands and which ones should I avoid? I'm looking to get a used car. I have even heard about two lesser known Japanese brands, Subaru and Suzuki, but I'm a bit skeptical of Suzuki in particular. I'm honestly not a supporter of Mitsubishi and Mazda. I would not say having AWD/4WD is necessary for me. It is not very snowy where I live. The reason I said that I do not like Mazda was because it used to be partnered with Ford and I do not like American car companies. I'm not so keen on German cars.
  • How do you determine if your car is under California or Federal emissions if your emissions sticker is gone? I have a 1993 ford taurus 3.8L V6 GL 4dr. Sedan. I need to know if my car is under California or federal emissions. I know you are suppose to have a sticker on your car that tells you but mine was destroyed over time so I really don't know. Is their another way to get this information? How would I find out?
  • Failed emissions test trouble code P0462? I have a 2004 Ford Taurus that couldn't pass the emissions test due to this code P0462. Is this a faulty fuel level sensor? I had a problem about 1yr ago with the gas gauge showing the empty when it wasn't. But that seems to be ok now. Or could it be a fuel pump? I'm not sure what to do.
  • Pressure testing radiator, air comes out overflow? I have a 1998 ford ranger 3.0 litre. I have a engine over heat issue and when I try to pressure test the radiator air bubbles are coming through the overflow resevior for coolant. Am I doing something wrong? Should the radiator hold pressure ( I just replaced it)?
