What small used (cheap) SUV is good in snow?

I know it's a little early to be thinking about winter but I can't afford to be stuck this year. I have a 2014 Ford Focus and it's fine in normal southern Ohio snow. But last winter we often saw 8inches or more. I got stuck just in a parking spot twice and had to miss work which I was written up for. I'm just looking for something used and cheap. My friend has a old '99Jeep Wrangler that runs but need a lot of work to run properly (it was wrecked and also rained inside plus a beehive was on the car). Sounds like a lot of work but I'd get the car for free as it's just sitting in her backyard. What other cheap old suv is a good option?

1990's Ford Explorer 4wd. I had my share of sensor problems with my 1994, but that bucket of bolts was bone stock and never had a tinge of trouble in Missouri Slush. Why? Because it has a Limited Slip rear Differential with snow tires! Any good winter vehicle needs an LSD, good tires and a good driver. Even a 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX has this feature, though it lacks ground clearance.

Do you have winter tires for your Focus? If you don't you should, by son has the same car, I bought him a set of four General winter tires mounted on wheels (we live in New England) and he had no problem. This will cost you a lot less than buying another car, insuring it, etc. Also - always keep a snow shovel in the car, it can come in handy.

It's wheels and tyres that will get you through. Get some BFG all terrain mud and snow tyres. And learn how to drive in snow. Never rev up if the wheels spin. Ease off. Centre and axle diff locks add a lot of ability. Traction control less so.

Snow tires.

Problem solved.

My 1988 Volvo with RWD and 100hp will go through more snow using winter tires than most SUVS with all seasons.

Subarus are good in snow

There are no vehicles as you describe for the generic term, Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) does not identify any "special qualities" as to mud, snow, ice, roads. Many SUV's are front wheel drive just like the Focus. Besides, even the mighty Jeep brand of vehicles can't handle eight inches of snow. Just Google "SUV's crashed in snow." You need training as to driving in less than perfect roads and a new job that is more understanding as to inclement weather.

  • Small SUV for teen driver? I'm only 15 now, but my mom told me I should start researching cars and SUVs. We have agreed on Nissan Rouges, Subaru Foresters, and Toyota RAV4s (possibly Honda CRVs) NO OLDER THAN 2009… My mom drives a Subaru and really wants me to get the Forester. The problem is, Foresters are more expensive than any of the others. They are all about the same size, same mpg. What would you recommend of the four? Which is the best for a new driver? Any other suggestions? (No ford, Chevy, jeep, etc.)
  • What is a good, cheap, RELIABLE used truck for hauling a trailer? (Mowing)? It would be for my mowing and yard work business. It will also be my first vehicle as I turn 16 in a few months. I can afford around $6200 or less. I would prefer that it would last for several years, which is the Most IMPORTANT aspect. Ford Rangers are very cheap, but would they hold up for very long carrying around a trailer with a zero turn mower, push mower, and trimmer?
  • Is it possible to trade my 2012 Ford Fusion for a small suv and camper? I have a 2012 Ford Fusion I'm thinking about trading it for a small SUV and camper. We're looking at purchasing a 31 ft. Travel trailer to live in over the next year or two It's just my husband and I. Is this something that could be worked out and if so how? Or would is it cause a financial loss to me? Is it more trouble than it is worth? Seeking knowledgeable responses please.
