Is 75mph legal on a motorway in the UK?

I know it's 70mph on a motorway or a double dual lane carriage way, it's 60 on a single dual carriage way, but I do 65mph on a single and on a double or motorway I do 75mph so will the police be bothered stopping me then? I have a 2004 Ford Focus ghia mk1 with 172,000 miles on the clock and beneath my car their is a rumbling sound I think it needs repairing any suggestions what it could be? Could it be the exghuast or something?

Well… No. As you well know the speed limit on a UK motorway is 70mph. However when your speedo is reading 75 mph you are probably only doing 70 any way due to the inaccuracy of the (always optimistic) instrument. Also allow for 'plod' giving you a certain percentage as 'leeway' and you are very unlikely to get a 'pull' with anything less than 80 on your clock.
"Rumbling" noise from a 172K car of 12 yrs old could be a lot of things, almost certainly down to wear. Have your wheel bearings checked.

"Is 75mph legal on a motorway in the UK?"
No. Since the maximum legal speed on any British road is 70mph, why would 75mph be legal in any way?

"I know it's 70mph on a motorway or a double dual lane carriage way…"
You seem to be confused - there's no such thing as a 'double lane dual carriageway'. It does not exist.

"… It's 60 on a single dual carriage way…"
Yes, I was right - you are confused. We have EITHER single carriageways (which have no central reservation) OR dual carriageways (which have a central reservation, like on a motorway).

"… But I do 65mph on a single and on a double or motorway I do 75mph so will the police be bothered stopping me then?"
Given that you are breaking the law, quite possibly.

"… Beneath my car their is a rumbling sound…"
Possibly wheel bearings, drive shaft bearings, suspension bearings or clutch.

  • My neighbor towed my car with his truck. Is that legal? I live in a town home complex and I parked in the visitors parking lot for a couple of hours and my neighbor decided to take out his black monster truck and tow my car himself. Is that legal? The truck is a typical black ford monster truck. Any info would be greatly appreciated. It just doesn't seem right, can any civilian use their truck as a towing service?
  • Suggestions for Ford Mustang GT CA smog legal exhaust system? I just purchased a 2005 Mustang GT, and I'm looking to improve the sound while still being California emissions legal. Don't know much about exhaust tuning… I love how some cars crackle and pop on liftoff. What can I do to get that? Upgrading performance and cost aren't a big deal to me, I just want it to sound better than stock and give it some more noise.
