Ford Focus ST has higher top speed than Mustang GT? - 1

I'm a huge car enthusiast. I'm also a big time Ford guy. However, I was reading through the MSN Autos article about the top 10 cheapest cars to hit 150 mph. The first car on the list was the very impressive Ford Focus ST with the 2.0 Ecoboost cranking 252 horsepower. For the Focus nameplate, it can achieve mind-boggling speeds of 155 mph. I thought that was very remarkable. However, I came upon the Mustang GT 5.0 V8 later down the list. It said that Ford limited the car to 147 mph this year. The darned thing has 420 horsepower and a Mustang GT nameplate, and you're going to limit it to 8 mph slower than a Focus?! Come on Ford, smarten up.

I know a little about governors or speed limiters. I know that they limit the top speed mainly for the tires or other key engine parts that can't take high speeds. However, can anyone explain to me why Ford would limit their top muscle car (under the GT500 of course) to a top speed of 147 mph while the Focus ST is limited to 155 mph? It seems utterly stupid to do that, even though it is a minor thing.

Focur RS is faster than the ST and both the VWGolf R and Audi S3 beat the RS.

Mhm

Pro Tip: When you're going to spam old questions, at least make sure they are still up to date. The S550 Mustang GT is governed to 164 MPH

OK, where exactly are you going to go 147 mph?

Last year I had a Ferrari Italia out on a real racetrack and I barely cracked 130 mph before having to get on the binders again.

Don't worry about speeds you are never going to see in the real world.

My Mustang tops at 190

In the case of the Mustang it has to do with the driveshaft vibrating at higher speeds. And you can disable the speed limiter with a tuner if you choose to do so. And also how often are you driving your car at 150 MPH? It's really a moot point.

  • What is the top speed for a 1993 ford explore cut 4x4 v6? I want to buy me the 93' but I want speed, does anyone know the top speed for the 93 explore in mph
  • Can I make my five speed to a six speed? I have a 91 Ford Ranger 3.0L V6 five speed. I know it's not an idea vehicle to fix but I enjoy the vehicle much. I would to fix it up, I know to give it a better performance that I have to make a lot of things custom. One thing I'd like to do is change it to a six speed, would it be wise to do so and is it possible? I'm hoping for a little bit gas mileage doing this and maybe faster acceleration?
  • 1983 ford ranger top speed? I have a 1983 ford ranger 2.3 literthat i'm getting running wondering top speed and acceleration thanks! Bought it cheap restoring it.
