Are Ford Focus's holding up?

Looking at a '01 wagon with 2.0 L 4 cylinder, automatic with about 86,000 miles. Curious as to how far I may be able to rack up the odometer before having troubles.

If I where you, I wouldn't even invest a penny into a new car. I used all of my money on a classic. Ford Focus's are worthless. This same concept applies to all new cars. Too many wires, to many electronics, too many buttons, too many gizmoes. It's all made in ching chong china, it's all made of aluminium, it's all plastic, it all will break in a very short time, and it's made to break so you will invest your money into new parts and it will keep breaking. If a switch shorts out, you're gonna need to take the car to a specialist so he can take the door panel off so you can give him your hard earned money so a little window switch can be fixed so you can roll down your window(if it was an older car with a crank window, you wouldn't have to worry about it.)

The same can be said about the foot gate activated thing(you put your foot on a tailgate and it opens up.), The automatic parking as well, and the automatic stop… It's all pointless. If you need to rely on technology to get things done then it's not worth it.

Contrary to what the other guy said. Modern cars are miles ahead of classics in terms of reliability and safety. It was a rarity for a car from the 40's,50's or 60's, to make it much past 100k miles, these days most cars will do 200k miles with just basic maintence and minimal repairs. It used to be to you had to change your oil ever 3,000 miles, lube a half dozen zerk fittings with every oil change, get new spark plugs every 15k-20k miles, and changed out the distributor cap and rotor, and keep your carburetor(s) in adjustment as well. Today you change your oil every 5k-10k miles, and change your spark plugs every 100k miles or so, and that's about it.

I don't have anything against classic car, I have one, but it's not my daily driver.

Anyway, as for an 01 Focus, it's a 15 year old car at this point, things are going to start breaking/degrading due to age. You're not going to get another 100k 100% trouble free miles out of this car or any other 15 year old car for that matter. The engine should've had it's timing belt replaced by now. However the 2.0L Zetec is a non-interference engine so it the timing belt breaks, there shouldn't be any damage to the engine.

  • Ford taurus, ford focus, ford escort or mercury cougar? Looking for a new used car, anyone know if any of these are bad cars? They're all in the 2000-2005 range I'm leaning towards the focus cause it gets good mileage and has good storage, also I've heard it does alright in snow. Anyone have any bad experiences with any of these cars or have any bad feedback?
  • What car should I choose ford ka or ford focus? Basically my parents have this ford focus and its coming up to my 17th birthday so they said I could have that car if I put some money towards it which i'm willing to do however a family friend who is a mechanic is selling a Ford ka and he thinks that is a better first car for me. The focus is diesel but I think the ka is petrol. Which one is cheaper, safer or better as a first car?
  • Have the Ford Focus been holding up? Considering getting a car that gets decent fuel mileage, cheap in price not quality. How has the focus been doing the 4 or 5 years? How does it compare in handling, maintenance, etc. Say with the VW Jettas, Passats, Beetles or even Chevy's of similar size?
  • Ford Focus - Do you know anyone who owns this Particular Ford Focus? Do you know anyone who owns the 2011- Ford Focus 1.6 ti-vct (petrol) 105bhp version? I own this car and find that it's performance on hills is poor even allowing that it is 100kg heavier than the 1998-2004 Ford Focus. E.g. On a hill in 3rd gear with the engine at 1500-2000rpm it can struggle even when my foot is 3/4 down on the accelerator pedal. Has anyone else had this trouble or heard about it with this model?
