Am I overpaying for car insurance?

At the moment I drive a 2013 Ford Focus SE. I got it at the start of June last year (2013), and since then have had no accidents, no tickets, no warnings, no incidents of any kind. I'll be 19 next month, and currently attend a University and maintain a 3.7 GPA, and I live in Michigan.

Currently I'm insured with State Farm for a $500 deductible, and I pay about $304 a month for car insurance. Now I understand I drive a new car and that generally ramps the cost up, but how in hell do some people my age have the same coverage as I do, yet only pay $100 a month for cars that are just as new and a lot more expensive? (i.e, camaro, mustang, etc). By the way I do believe I have coverage for rental car and tow service.

I know state farm is a reputable company that won't necessarily screw me like some other companies might, but are they overcharging me for this? I'm a full time college student and my net income at the moment is just barely enough to cover this, gas, and the 200 a month the actual car costs. (It's a lease for 3 years)

No, it's a reasonable cost. Since you have a 3 year lease, you are required to have a higher level of insurance that I would bet your friends don't have. You are comparing apples to oranges.

  • Why doesn't car manufacturers provide their own car insurance? I always ask myself this question. Why doesn't the Ford, Chevrolet, Mercedes Benz, Toyota, Nissan, and more provide their own car insurance? It's doesn't make a lot of sense to leave the insurance duties to companies that knows little to nothing about cars. Plus, Insurance would be cheaper. Sick and tired of getting RIP off by the Geico, and State farms of the world. What do you people think?
  • If you have a car accident with a borrowed car, whose insurance are you covered by? Okay, my dad just totaled my grandma's 1999 Ford Taurus wagon. He was trying to turn and we hit a Nissan Frontier. The Nissan was fine, but the Ford is totaled, and my dad has never been in accident like this ever before. Does this go under my dad's insurance or my grandma's? She did give him the permission to drive it.
  • How much is car insurance for older muscle cars? I heard that car insurance is pretty expensive for older muscle cars, and I'd like to know around how much a month car insurance would be for a 1968 ford mustang?
  • What kind of car insurance for? We were given a totaled Ford Focus SE and we do not know what kind of insurance we need to get and which is the best insurance… How much will it cost? Please help as soon as possible! The more details on insurance, costs, and terminology will be greatly appreciated!
