Buying first car. I'm going for a used one. Is this a good choice?

Requirements: driving to work and back 4 days a week = 8 mile round trip (or 32 miles a week). Mostly consisting of slow commuter traffic.

weekend driving further afield to nice places to walk the dog. This is a total estimate, but I'd say anything from 30-80 miles a weekend on average which will include faster driving (motorways/dual carriage ways etc.)

on top of that probably 2 or 3 longer drives a year to see family (who live 200 miles away) or go on holiday somewhere further afield.

All in all I make that somewhere in the region of 5-7k miles a year.

I'm looking at a Ford Fiesta diesel. Main reason for the diesel being that my partner has had a food operation in the past and finds the clutch on petrols tricky as there isn't much leeway for error and, due to her operation, holding the clutch on a hill in a petrol can be difficult for her and is likely to stall.

Anyway, I have 2 in mind at the moment. A 2010 model with 100k miles on it at £4k, or a 2011 model with 100k miles at £4.6k

I could go more expensive and buy something nearer the £6k mark that has less mileage, but due to the amount I'm likely to use it, is it worth spending that extra £1-2k for less mileage?

Any advice with explanations welcome!

Look into the Pagani Zonda. It is a cheap, reliable and fuel efficient car. Great for a first time driver.

I would personally recommend at looking at something slightly older with lower mileage. Mileage is everything as mileage is wear on practically everything. Year is generally just wear on the aesphetics.

I currently drive a Peugeot 1.4 diesel and is very pleasant.

A 100k om one of those puts you into the used car lottery and at a stake of £4k plus I would not make that gamble
Teach her to drive properly using the handbrake to hold the car rather than the clutch on hills and open up the choice a bit.
For those miles a petrol car with less miles on will be far better

  • Is purchasing a Ford with 80,000 miles a good choice? So basically my boyfriend and I have been looking for a perfect van to road trip in, and we saw this absolutely perfect Ford Econoline 150 that is cutom made. The interior is in mint condition as well as the exterior and as far as I know the engine and everything is in perfect shape. Basically my question today is if this purchase would be worth it or do fords burn out quickly? The van is 1995 with 80,000 miles and it is $11,000. I think it is pretty good deal but I need a second opinion.
  • What would be a good first car to get that you can get used Like, ford fusion, camri, civic, etc. These are just some examples, this is my first car and I'm not sure what to look for.

  • Ford Fiesta 2011 good choice? I'm looking to buy a car that fits my budget but also want something reliable enough. This Ford Fiesta SEL at that Toyota dealership has caught my attention. It is fully equipped (heated seats, bluetooth.blah blah blah all these little extra toys), for sale at 5,700$ (price slashed from 6,900$) with 65,000 miles on it (105,000km) I want honest opinion… Is this a good deal? Is Ford Fiesta known for recurring problems?
