What is making my truck idle rough?

I have an 03 Ford F-150 and starting about a year ago it was starting to idle rough while it was in park but now it does it when simply not moving. The rpm keeps jumping up and down and the truck vibrates real bad almost like it's trying to fight to stay running. If I let it sit like that eventually the lights dim and it does almost die. I have had plugs and coils changed 6 months ago but could it be another issue? Battery or injectors? Any help would be great thanks!

Could be injectors…
Could be fuel pump or filter…
However those would have failed months ago.
Get your motor mounts checked.
If they are good, have them run a diagnostic on your computer.

Could be, could be, could be. Mechanics charge because they spend thousands of dollars on diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot drive-ability problems. 40 years ago cars needed a tune up every 12 months. Now people are offended when it is suggested every 3 years. Have you modified the truck; like installing one of those K&N air filters that supposedly last forever? I'll bet this truck has rolled over 100,000 miles? Has it been tuned up? (That is more than replacing the plugs). Replacing expensive items like coils should only be done when you are sure they are bad, not as a guess. You can throw parts at this truck until your broke and may never guess the problem. Take it down to O'Rielleys (or Autozone) and ask them to pull codes for you (free). That is a good start. Or, spring for a mechanic to fix it, either way.

  • 2007 Ford Taurus rough idle and dies of I don't put my foot on the gas? I have a 2007 Ford Taurus that has a very rough idle but once I get to 30 miles per hour or so everything is fine. Since this started my battery is always dead when I go to start my car. I've replaced the ignition coil and the wires cause autozone said that was the problem. But it still is acting the same way. The car dies when in idle and I don't know what else to do. Any help is appreciated.
  • Why does my Ford Ranger start rough idle when engine is hot? I have a 2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4 with 4.0 litre SOHC engine, it starts good when cold, but I get a rough idle start when the truck was already used and heated up. Engine diagnostics show nothing, I changed the air filter a month ago, changed platinum plugs and plug wires last year, regular oil and filter changes been done. I'm running out of ideas on the cause of this rough idle. Any suggestions, please answer.
  • Ford Ranger 4.0, 172,000 miles rough idle when starting after sitting overnight or after 2-3 hours. Starts 1st crank, idles rough 1 minute? Or so and then smooths out and runs fine. New heads and gaskets. Cleaned MAF sensor, throttle body and air intake sensor, new IAC valve, new air and fuel filters, new PCV valve. No smoke coming from exhaust and No check engine light. Any ideas what's causing this rough idle?
