Why does my 2005 Ford Explorer idle low and shake when it starts up?

Gauges flicker at this time as well but once I give it a little gas it seems to run fine. It continues to start fine until it sits for more than a hour then this happens again upon start up.

1 always start with battery
2 if good w tight/clean cables test alternator

Pull the battery cable clamp off of the positive ( red wire ) battery cable post & scrape both the inside of the clamp & the sides of the post with the blade of a small pocket knife. Big Fords love to corrode that specific connection. If that helps, most all car parts stores carry a small wire brush designed just for that job.

  • 1998 Ford Taurus Dies At Low Idle? 1998 Ford Taurus I know needs new alternator because battery won't stay charged. When I boost the vehicle off it will run at 1000 RPMs smooth. No vibration. As I lower RPMs below 1000 it begins to sputter almost like it's missing. Eventually will die completely. Could the alternator not keeping charge to the system cause this? If not what could be other problems?
  • Ford Ranger 4.0, 172,000 miles rough idle when starting after sitting overnight or after 2-3 hours. Starts 1st crank, idles rough 1 minute? Or so and then smooths out and runs fine. New heads and gaskets. Cleaned MAF sensor, throttle body and air intake sensor, new IAC valve, new air and fuel filters, new PCV valve. No smoke coming from exhaust and No check engine light. Any ideas what's causing this rough idle?
  • I bought an Actron CP9125 Code Reader to try and diagnose a rough idle at cold start on a 98 Ford 4.0 engine. The rough idle had not caused? The CEL to come on. I plugged the code reader in with just the key on and pressed read and the little asterisk goes half-way across the screen one time and stops. I press the read button again and it reads 0 codes. I was thinking it would scan multiple times to check for pending codes or other issues. I tried it with the engine running and the same thing happens. Is this code reader operating properly?
  • Why does my Ford Focus shake when maintaining 70 mph? I've got a 2007 Ford Focus hatchback. My husband did an oil change on it about month ago. Since then there's a vibration. Everything feels fine until you go 70 mph. While trying to maintain the speed the whole car shakes. It feels like it is about to stall, but doesn't or at least, hasn't yet. The shaking stops when accelerating or decelerating. Its an automatic and the engine light pops on and off. It only happens while trying to maintain speed in the 69-71mph range.
