Ran Engine with Cracked Spark Plug. Ticking Now?

Okay I have a 99 Ford Explorer XLT, recently got some assistance doing a checkup and decided to pull out a spark plug to see what it looked like. Cleaned Mass Airflow sensor as well. (Got rid of po171&174 error codes by doing so) my father inlaw decided to drive and I rode shotgun. The engine was running like absolute crap at first. Now he lives on an acherage and we hit the rode at highway speeds with it bucking and kicking and there was a god aweful smell to which he thought was the MAF sensor adjusting the fuel air ratio. The engine did not over heat and stayed on average temp. But I noticed the CEL was blinking and to me it indicated the misfire. I hopped out at one point and looked under the suv and seen puffs of smoke+aweful smell of burning or something coming from the upper heat shield on my exhaust. I told him to hit the nearest part store so I could get more spark plugs. Now we drove it at higher speeds and even when it was misfiring he revved the heck out of it saying it did it last time he cleaned the MAF. (Bought it off him) … So we get back, pull the same plug again and noticed a hairline crack in the ceramic. Bingo. Replaced it. Misfire gone and smell eventually dissipated… Now there's a loud metallic ticking noise at idle (possibly at speed) that I never noticed before this.

Any thoughts on what could have been damaged through this ordeal? Should have left good enough alone. What could be damaged by over revving a misfiring engine?!

You might have overheated the catalytic converter and shattered the ceramic honeycomb. Driving hard with a flashing check engine light is the best way to destroy a cat converter. The misfires heat it up to about 2,500--500 past its limit. See this post

Are you sure you put the correct plug(s) in? I'm thinking length.

  • Ticking noise coming from engine? - 1 I have a 1978 Ford Ranchero and there's a ticking noise coming from the passenger side In engine. And this car was given to me and I had my camshaft, timing chain set, and all 16 lifters changed what can this noise be? Could it be from a bad rocker arm? And what can I do to quiet this noise. I'm broke so I can't do any further expensive repairs
  • Would bad spark plug wires cause a check engine light? I just changed the valve cover gasket on my car. Then when I tried to start it, it started violently shaking and the check engine light turned on. The only thing I could think is that maybe the spark plug wires broke when I took them off. Would that cause a check engine light? It's a 2002 Ford Focus ZTS with 150000 miles
  • I have a 1976 Ford F150 with a 390 engine. Can anyone tell me what the spark plug gap should be? Don't answer if you don't know. And don't answer if you are just trying to be a wise guy.
  • Ford F-150 Truck started, ran rough. Now won't start at all. Any ideas? 1977 Ford F-150 with carburetor, 8 cylinders. After several attempts, it started immediately (without the usual starter crank-up sound), ran loud & rough like a lawnmower. I turned it off, now it won't start. Starter is strong, battery full, airfilter good, fresh fuel is reaching the carb. Weather is hot and slightly humid. Anyone have a guess?
