Problem filling my gas tank?

I have a 2005 ford explorer V6. The past week every time I go to a gas station and put gas in, it only let me put about 20 cents in before shutting the pump off as if my tank is full, but it really isn't.

I have tried everything I can think of, I gone to cheap and expensive gas stations. That doesn't help. I checked and made sure there's noting wrong with the outside of the gas line. I don't want to take it to a repair shop and pay a ton of money to fix it.

The only way for me to put gas into it is from a gas can.

The tanks have a vent so the air can get out as the gas goes in. If the vent is plugged then pressure builds because the air can't get out and that causes the pump to kick off. The vent usually comes out at the filler neck.

You probably have a bad EVAP canister vent solenoid that is stuck closed!

Check:
1. Disconnect evaporative canister located in rear of vehicle above spare tire.

2. If you can now fill fuel tank, fault will be in canister vent valve or plugged canister.

3. If fault is still present, disconnect all evaporative lines from fuel tank one at a time, if you can fill tank with any of them disconnected, fault will be in that line.

4. If the tank still can't be filled, fault will be in the tank or filler neck.

MasTec is right. Read this post on how EVAP systems work and his advice will make more sense

  • Is it normal to have to fill the gas tank of a 2000 ford Taurus se every week? Don't laugh. I'm ignorant about cars and this is my first one. I own a 2000 Taurus station wagon. I drive 6 miles to work and 6 miles back every day and don't drive many other places than that. I live in the city. I'm filling my tank every week and my boyfriend says that's way too much. He says I should replace the spark plugs. Would he be correct?
  • My 1996 ford ranger will not start right away after filling up with gas? I turn the key and the starter just keeps trying to catch but engine never does. I've replaced the fuel filter, fuel lines and sensor in the fuel tank. Spark plugs and wires, alternator, timing belt, starter and battery are all less than a year old. I don't let the gas tank get below a quarter of a tank.
  • Gas gauge issues 2001 ford ranger 2wd manual 3.0 engine. 12 gallon gas tank? The gas gauge fluctuates between 3/8 and 7/8 somewhat correlating to the amount of gas in my tank but it isn't accurate. What can i do to try and fix this problem? I'm hoping it isn't the float in the gas tank and would like to cover everything else before i drop my gas tank. additional information will be added as requested Gas gauge problems? 2001 ford ranger with a 3.0 engine manual transmission and a 12 gallon gas tank
