96 Explorer won't start after sitting for a few years?

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer, V8, 4.6L. It's been sitting in my driveway for several years because it didn't pass inspection, supposedly due to an EGR valve/regulator and I didn't have the money at the time to fix it. Well I've finally decided to try to sell it and want to at least get it to start. Last summer I put in a new battery and about a gallon of fresh gas and it started right up. Slacked off on starting it regularly so it sat a while longer. I've recently replaced the battery and added a little more fresh gas but it won't start up now. It cranks strong, like it wants to start and all lights come on but it just won't catch. I know this isn't exactly uncommon, but what has me wondering is that the fuel gauge is stuck at full, although I know there's maybe a 1/4 tank or so in it. I don't know if possibly I dislodged some sludge or something when I started it last year that may he possibly screwed up this sensor and clogged a fuel line or something. I'm pretty handy but by no means a mechanic so I'm just tossing out ideas. I did check the fuel pump reset and that seems to be fine, as do all of the fuses. Not really sure where else to go from there. Any help would be appreciated.

Check and see if it has pressure on the fuel rail. On top of the engine going into the throttle body will be the fuel rail. You'll see a capped fitting on the rail. Take the cap off, crank the engine over. And then press the schrader valve to see if gas sprays out. It's possible it has a clogged fuel filter or pickup for the pump in the tank. I would also empty the tank and start over with fresh gas. Fresh gas should be your first step.

I would pull the distributor cap and see if its wet, they won't fire if they're wet, but you didn't say where your located.

  • What parts will I need for a 2005 Ford Taurus 3.0L SFI DOHC 6cyl that has been sitting for 2 years? Right now my list includes: battery, wiper blades, air fliter, front and rear brake pads and all 4 tires? Also what mechanic services will I need? So far that lists includes: a tune-up, oil change, and an engine flush. Your help would be very appreciated.
  • What can go wrong from a car sitting a few months? My car has been sitting in my grandparent's carport for a few months. I tried to jump start it today, the lights turned on and all the electronic stuff worked but it wouldn't start. Do I just need to try again or could it be the starter or something? It's a 1998 Ford Taurus.
  • My car won't start until I've waited a few minutes? I have a Ford Taurus SES and this morning I tried to start it and couldn't. I tried 3 times but it wouldn't work, the engine turned but wouldn't start. After waiting 2-3 minutes it started like normal. My battery is pretty new and is reading steadily at 13.8 volts. I don't see any problems with the connections either, no corrosion, everything looks like it's in good shape. Any thoughts?
  • 2002 ford Taurus cuts off a few secs after acceleration? OK my Taurus cranks and starts but she's shaking and sputtering like she's struggling to stay alive. When I press on the gas she dies. I have no problem cranking her back up. What's wrong with my baby?
