Will my vehicle pass emissions with a bad EGR valve? - 1
Added (1). I just purchased a 2003 Ford Expedition and I noticed the service engine light on and went to have it checked out with a local mechanic. He told me the EGR is bad and it would cost $275 + labor to replace. He says that it has to do with emissions from the engine recirculating back into the injectors to recycle unused fuel. Will this affect the emissions testing?
Yes, it will adversely affect the test result. Emissions reduction is the only purpose of those troublesome and otherwise useless devices.
Not likely. If your car has an OBDII system, it will throw a code that will prevent the passing of your emissions test. A bad EGR will show high NOx levels.
You'll probably fail emissions. $275 is a steep price, you can search online for "OEM 2003 Ford Expedition parts", then browse parts for the emissions system. You will see that you can purchase the part yourself online for $100-125. The shop is upcharging you about 125%, plus charging additional labor.
You can save money by buying the part yourself and just paying for labor.
Nope, its common sense. Egr IS one of the essential parts that control emissions. Just some food for thoughts.
Yes. You will get hi NOX readings. Plus your engine will have a tendency to knock and require the use of super fuel. Could eventually burn holes in the pistons. EGRs use exhaust gasses for their inertness to vary combustion volume. Not only will it fail but the engine won't run as designed. Longevity will be way shortened.
Many of todays engines don't have EGRs because they use variable valve timing to get the same result. Very necessary.
$275 should include intake port cleaning which raises the price.
Most probably not. You need to either replace the EGR valve or move to a free state that does not test emissions.
If it could, then it wouldn't be needed.
So why don't you just get a new one and install it?
