There are several reasons why that could be and without some investigation no one will know your answer
Perhaps, when your car stopped running, what you thought was " being out of gas" was really not the problem, so by adding gas, you still have the original problem, what ever it was that stopped the engine. You need to have someone who can check it out, look at it. They can determine IF it is getting fuel, and if so, then it could be ignition. IF it is NOT getting fuel, then they can look for THAT reason. We on here, can't analyze the problem without more information and even at that, without actual testing, we can't sometimes give an answer.
Get someone who CAN check it for fuel AND for ignition. I think the car died for other reasons then running out of fuel. Maybe the fuel pump just quit, who knows?
When you run out of gas, air can get into the fuel lines which needs to be purged out before the engine will get primed with proper fuel pressure and start. Try this.turn the ignition key to the Run position but do not try starting… You should hear the fuel pump in the fuel tank run for a few seconds and then turn off. Turn the key back off… Repeat this a few times of on - off and then try starting… That should purge any air in the fuel system and allow proper starting.
If the car still won't start, it's also possible that the fuel pump is fried… They need a flow of fuel to cool them so running out of fuel can overheat them and fry them out if left running to long. Not always a good outcome to run out of gas on modern cars. A shop would have to test the pump/fuel pressure or check for other issues which may have caused the car to die or not start. Check for a blown fuel pump circuit fuse just in case that may be an issue…
Probably not an issue, but poke around under the dash for the enertia shut off switch and press it. Then make sure you turn the key to the on position and let the pump run for two long excruciating minutes without trying to start the engine, those pumps are low volume, it takes a long to to fill fuel line, and may shutdown if you try to start.

- Entire car loses power when we floor the gas. Gauges reset until we let off gas. (still drives) 02 ford mustang. The car loses power to everything. (Except what's needed for the vehichle to stay running.) Can still drive it. What are possible problems? (AC does not affect anything )
- Must I put premium gas in my 1965 Ford F100 390 V8 or can i put regular gas? I was told that it needs premium gas and premium gas only. But the guy who I bought the truck from said it was a myth and it takes regular gas. What gas does my Ford F100 390 v8 engine take?!
- Car ran outta gas. I put half a gallon into it and turn it over, sounds like it 'wants' to start, it 'grabs' for a sec then nothing I tried so many times my battery wore out (old battery). Would could be the problem? No carburetor so its not 'flooded', what to do? Ford focus 2007
