How to hook up external amplifiers?

I have a 98 Ford Explorer and I plan to buy four 6.5" component speakers for my doors. I was looking into JBL GTO638 s and want to adequately power them. What would I need and how do I hook it up? When I purchased the vehicle it already had 2 sets of speaker wire ran to the back. Could I hook the amp to these wires that run directly from the car battery and power my speakers with it?

You would have to trace those wires and see where they lead. They may be front speaker wires, maybe rear, maybe nothing is connected at the other end.

You'll need to run a power wire from the battery, probably 8 awg. Ground wire from the amp to the chassis, same awg. Signal (rca) wires from the HU to the amp. If you still have the stock radio you may need a line output converter to get rca outputs for the amp. There's also the remote turn on lead. Easy if it's aftermarket. Harder if it's stock.

  • What's the proper way to hook up these speakers? I picked up a 2004 Ford Mustang Mach 1 for a pretty rediculously low price. It does have some cosmetic issues. The only one I don't have any experience with is speakers. The front two speakers (in the door) were deffinatly not installed correctly. When I give them power the work fine but how do I do this right?
