Is 90-93 db inside a car too loud?

It didn't occur to me before but recently I wanted to find out if some gearheads on here think that 90-93 db is excessive for a car with an aftermarket exhaust system. I downloaded an app (which of course could or could not be accurate unless its a true db meter) and most average of the vehicles i'm in are within the 80-84db range with stock components. I installed an exhaust system for my car that came with a silencer and with the silener installed car purrs at 82-85 db inside the car, the difference is that it has a smoother low end burble now. Without the silencer, the car is at 90-93db at 70 mph at 3K RPMs. I used to drive an older 93 Ford F250 pickup with a 4" piping and a Flowmaster muffler and am used to hwy drone. I'm 21 now and wondered if 93 db can damage hearing in the long term even though I'm insulated within the car. I have driven the car without the silencer for almost a year and it never bugged me until now, to the point its awkward driving a quiet car. The max i drive daily is 1 hour tops. I know motorcyclists have it worse.

Added (1). I would install a silencer but I'm not sure if my EGT's are affected since my car came originally with 2" factory and I installed a 3" system from the headers all the way out. Car is a 240sx. Would my egts rise even though i expanded the piping but am now restricting it with a silencer insert or am I being to overcautious. Car is equipped with a 2.4L Inline 4.

Hi so inside your ears are small hairs which when loud noise or music gets above a certain level will shear these hairs off. Never to grow again, so you become permanentlydeaf. This fact most young people never want to hear about when loading up a car with huge sound systems let alone the exhaust noise. This has two negative effects higher fuel consumption. The chances of getting a ticket for making too much noise. As well as the car performing badly with reduced top speed and poor acceleration. All to make loads of NOISE.

In a workplace you are required to wear hearing protection if the noise level is over 85db. 93 db is about what my chainsaw is rated at.

As you grow up you realise that a load exhaust is really just annoying, especially if it's that loud at cruising speed on a a long trip.

A decent silence will loose almost no power as long as the system is designed properly, and make you car much more pleasant to ride in. (and safe your hearing)

  • Will water flood the inside of a car? Say that you drop an empty car into a deep pool of water (deeper than the height of the car), will the inside of the car flood? I know it is a stupid question, but I sort of want to know the answer to that question. I have seen land rovers ford some rivers and they seem fine even when the water was up to the vehicle's hood.
  • I'm in high school and about to get my first car looking for a loud, fast and good looking car So far I have looked into ford mustangs, I have a choice between a 2007 ford mustang gt with a 8 cylinder motor with automatic transmission, or I can get a 2013 mustang v6. My question is which of the two cars is a faster and louder car cause I would like to show it off and have heads turn by its engine as I drive off on the street. Thank you very much about to get my first car looking for a loud, fast and good looking car?
  • How to figure out if an engine can fit inside a car? How can i tell which engines fit in which cars. Basically i wanna build up and upgrade an engine until i feel good with it then when i have enough money to restore an old car, i'll drop the engine into the older car. For example i could build up a 90's camaro then brop it in an older car, example-69 mustang
