Are Ford Powerstroke 6.4Ls any good?

Looking at a 08 F250 4x4 6.4 Powerstroke diesel. It's got almost 180k. Looks to be well maintained.

Are the 6.4 motors any good? Is 180k too much?

It's better than a 6.0.

I wouldn't get one. The 6.4's have very poor fuel economy, are unnecessarily complex and difficult to service, and the built-in DPF system cooks it over time with each regen sequence. The only motors worth their weight in the Powerstroke lineup are the 7.3s and the latest 6.7s (even though the turbos in the 6.7s have ceramic ball bearings which are prone to failure). The 6.0s have shortcomings as well with their defective EGR coolers and weak head bolts.

I vote nay. No, it's not better than a 6.0 either… Almost anything that can go bad on a 6.0 could go bad on a 6.4… Only more expensive. I've heard/read too many stories on forums of people buying high mileage 6.4's and having nothing but problems. I'd feel more comfortable in a 7.3 with 250,000 poorly maintained miles than a miraculously maintained 6.4 with 140,000.

  • What is a better option Cummins or Powerstroke? So my dad and i are buying me a diesel truck and we're both a ford lover but i also love the dodge Cummins. Which would be better to own. Both are not brand new there both used and both have a good history and both only have 150k on them. What would be the better choice? The 7.3L Turbo diesel 1997 ford powerstroke or the 2002 Dodge 5.9L cummins.
  • I'm stuck between a Dodge 2500 cummins & Ford F250 powerstroke? I'm look at a year of 2006 to 2015 at a Dodge 2500 cummins or a Ford F 250 powerstroke what is the better?
  • How much would it cost to swap a v10 engine to a powerstroke engine? I was wanting to know apporximatly how much money i would waist on swaping my ford f250 superduty from a triton 6.8l v10 to a powerstroke like a 6.0 or 6.7l. And don't tell me to sell the truck and buy a new one cause i'm aware of that route. But i would like to see the estimated cost to swap the engines.
  • How long will a 7.3L powerstroke last? I have a 2002 Ford F-250 with the 7.3L powerstroke diesel engine. It had a banks powerpack system installed with turbocharger, techni-cooler intercooler system, monster exhaust, a pyrometer, waste gate actuator, trans command, and a high boost compressor wheel in 2006. It has a K&N air filter instead of a Banks RAM-AIR, don't ask why. (RAM-AIR is 100x better). I occasionally tow a 38ft. Montana fifth wheel behind it. It currently has 161,000 miles. How many more will it last?
