1984 ford f350 rear drum brakes. Are they for E-brake only?

I got a free 1984 ford f-350 and I'm wondering if the rear drums are for e brake only orarethey used in regular braking too?

No they are used for regular braking. Inside the brake drum is a set of brake shoes that are pushed open, or expanded, into the inside of the drum. There's what they call a wheel cylinder that has two push rods that are extended out whenever you apply you brake pedel, when these rods extend out, they expand the shoes apart, when the pedel is released, springs on the shoes bring them back away from the drum. When the emergency brake is applied, there's a cable that runs to a level on the rear assembly that expands the brake shoes as well and will release when the e brake is taken off. Only the rear brakes are locked in with the e brake on. I really suck at explaining things, so sorry if any of this was confusing.

All cars and trucks use front and rear when braking normally.

  • Will 1984 - 1995 corvette posi rear end hold up to 700 HP? Or can you get parts to beef a corvette rear end? I have heard that years ago street racers used to put a Ford Couger rear end in Chevy because the individual axles made it better for handling, so I thought I would check into using a corvette rear end assembly in a rat rod with 700 HP.

  • Rear drum replacement on a ford focus 2001? So my ford focus 2001 zx3 2.0 DOHC started to have some wobbling noise coming from the rear left side, which seems to be a bad wheel bearing. Since replacing just the bearing its a pain in the ***, I was going to get the drum with the bearing already pressed. When replacing a rear drum, do I have to put a new Centric Spindle Nut/Disc or use the old one? What about the spindle stub shaft? I would really appreciate your help
