Can I have a specific dealership bring in a used car from another dealership?

There's a particular pre-owned car I would like but unfortunately, the dealership I would like to use does not currently have it in their inventory.

I've bought from this dealership before and I'm positively enamored with the customer service I received with my last car. Hence, my desperate want to buy from them again.

So, my question is: Can my favorite dealership look at local dealerships for the car I want and somehow sell it to me? I've heard of dealerships trading cars before but I didn't know if that only applied to dealerships under the same name or brand or what have you. Has anyone done this before?
Any info is very much appreciated!

Sure they can. Most would be willing to do so. However, you can expect to have to pay for their time and trouble to obtain a vehicle from another automaker. If you are willing to pay those costs then they will be quite willing to oblige.

No you can't, unless, perhaps, they are owned by the same dealership. Vehicles are "owned" by the dealership, and is not in their best interest to attempt to work with any other dealership to trade between them. New vehicles are usually on the dealer's lot at the pleasure of the manufacturer and are more readily transferred. However, used cars have an impact on the dealership's bottom line, based on discount that may have been given on a new car, and any loan or maintenance that may have been required before they could put it on their lot. This impact or value is not publicly available outside of the dealership. Sometimes, their margin is large, other times, there's little room for negotiation on price. In any case, they don't usually trade between dealerships. In most cases, if you see a vehicle on a lot, you'll have to buy it from that dealer's lot.

Used car sales are not just for one brand of vehicle. A used car lot will have many different brands, where the new car lot will generally only hold one brand or one manufacturer. For example, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury will often be sold by the same dealer, and from the same or adjacent lots since they are brands sold by the Ford Motor Company. Dodge, RAM, Chrysler, Plymouth, Jeep are related to MOPAR / Chrysler and may be sold by the same dealership. Sometimes, a dealership may hold master agreements with multiple manufacturers and may be able to transfer vehicles between them, or consolidate all their used vehicles into one master inventory that may shift around from lot to lot, in order to be seen by different sets of potential customers, at various times. But, in general, they will not transfer used vehicle inventory between non-related dealerships.

Local dealers typically do not exchange USED cars from other dealerships, but it won't kill you to ask. Let your salesman know you're looing for a particular make and model of used car, and I'll bet they will try to find one for you.

It depends. Usually that is very tough with used cars. With new cars its not an issue, but usually used cars can't be transferred to another dealer.

If they are a chain, they can. I have done that at big dealerships.

Used cars, no. New cars, yes.
