2003 ford police interceptor rough running?

I'm buying a used 2003 police interceptor today. It has low gas because the dealer obviously keeps it low. The engine runs strong but a little but rough when I'm at a traffic light. When I drive it's smoothest and goes away. Nothing is leaking with pressure hoses and stuff. Should I just throw injector cleaner in it? Any special gas when I go to fill it? Let me know

Check for vacuum leaks.Spray carb cleaner around every gasket, vacuum hose, and vacuum operated component while the engine is idling. If the idle goes up, down, or the engine stalls you've located the leak. Any air that goes past the o2 sensors which wasn't metered(passed through the maf meter)will cause a lean air fuel mixture and possible rough idle and misfires. Check the pcv valve and any hose that attach to pcv system for leaks and clogs. Check exhaust manifolds for leaks too. Check the egr valve to make sure its functioning properly and its even better if you remove it and clean its passages out with carb cleaner.Carbon builds up and clogs valve. If it has a erratic idle, remove the iac valve and clean its passages with carb cleaner. Check tps voltage with multimeter and adjust if needed.Probe the tps signal wire with positive probe and tps negative wire with neg probe.Sensor should read 0.97-0.99 volts with key on/engine off.Loosen screws and turn sensor till voltage reads.97-.99.

2003 Ford Police Interceptor is basically a heavy duty Crown Vic with all the luxury bits stripped off. It's powered by a 4.6L SOHC 16 valve V8 good for around 240 horsepower.

They are usually rugged, reliable engines, but they do have their quirks.

First of all, if the car has more than 100,000 miles and is still running it's original spark plugs, replace them. That would most likely be your problem.

Be sure to pay attention to the torque specs on the plugs, because the aluminum cylinder head only has like 3 threads and it's easy to strip the out if you over tighten, and if you under tighten, the engine can blow them out.

The next thing I'd do is clean the MAF sensor. You'll need a tamper-proof torx driver to get it out, but you can find these at any parts store. The MAF sensor is right behind the air filter in the intake tube. Take it out, spray it down with electrical contact cleaner, let it dry, and re-install. Just be sure you DO NOT touch the wires on the senor element, because they are easy to break and expensive to replace.

That's the two most common sources of rough running engines on Ford 4.6's.
